Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth is one of the godfathers of the genre. The prose is a bit spare and journalistic. I wouldn’t say he’s like Dashiell Hammett, but that neighborhood. Some people love that, others not so much.
The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy is 1,000 percent Cold War propaganda, but a fantastic read nonetheless.
