Working in publishing here in Munich, I keep noticing this theme in manuscripts that really resonates with me. Looking for books that capture that specific expat experience where you're not quite German (or whatever country) but not really your original nationality anymore either.
Not looking for fish-out-of-water comedies or simple culture clash stories. More interested in that deeper psychological space where you love aspects of your adopted country but also feel perpetually outside it. Where going "home" feels strange too because you've changed.
Anyone know novels that really nail this liminal expat experience? Preferably literary fiction but open to memoirs too. Bonus points if they're set in Europe but honestly any location works if the emotional territory feels authentic.
