most rejected mate stories have a permanent bond that gets severed. Chasing My Ex-Luna does something different. the bond is a trial. four years. built-in exit clause.
Lyra accepted a trial mate arrangement with Alpha heir Dorian Blackthorne. for four years she's been his Luna, earned his parents' love, pursued a medical career on a Blackthorne scholarship. then his fated mate Seraphina comes back after three years and everything collapses.
the opening scene is Lyra telling Dorian she's pregnant. his fated mate demands Lyra strip for a pregnancy "exam." Dorian gives the Alpha command to undress. in front of the other woman.
the next morning the doctor denies ever diagnosing her. produces Lyra's dead mother's necklace as "bribery evidence." someone stole it months ago and planted it. the whole thing was orchestrated: bribe the doctor, steal the heirloom, frame the Luna.
chapter 3 Dorian drives away with Seraphina. doesn't look back. Lyra sits at a bus stop in the rain. she sees the doctor taking moon gold coins from Seraphina through a boutique window. proof. but she can't reach it.
the worldbuilding detail that makes this work is the trial bond itself. it's not just a plot device. Dorian's parents genuinely love Lyra. his mother defends her constantly. his father tells him "a true Alpha commits completely to his chosen mate." they don't know about the Reject ritual he's planning. when it happens, they'll lose a daughter.
what keeps it from being purely miserable is Lyra's competence. she's pursuing Advanced Healer status. she has a crucial qualification trial in two days. she's smarter than everyone in the room except the woman who's framing her.
chapter 8 Seraphina walks out of Dorian's office with what's very clearly not yogurt on her face. chapter 10 Lyra slaps her at a gas station and splashes gasoline near her designer shoes while holding a lighter.
the escalation from silent victim to open warfare takes exactly ten chapters and every step earns it.
