NSFW because of a couple of titles I might bring up to relay my point.
I've become a bit frustrated at all of the romantasy and "psychological thrillers" that have been hitting the shelves lately, and I'm looking for something that will really mess me up.
The Secret History and These Violent Delights are two of my favorite books, but I've also just remembered how much I enjoyed Confessions by Kanae Minato and how the twist literally made my jaw drop like no other book has before. Penance by Minato is also very good, but not quite on that same level.
I also enjoy horror books, including some body horror. I just finished reading Zola by D.E. McCluskey, and while it was well written and I enjoyed it as a whole, I don't think I've ever had a book make me gag as much as that one. The Cement Garden by Ian McEwan was also enjoyable, and a couple of other books of his are on my TBR.
Confessions hasn't left my mind the last few days, and I'm so close to starting to learn Japanese just to read more of Minato's works.
