Hi All! Long-time lurker, first-time caller.. anyways, I love books. Therefore my oldest son loves books. I believe it all started with him when I got him The Book With No Pictures when he was a little tyke. That book really illustrates what joy a book can bring using only words.
So fast forward, little dude is now in 5th grade, reading at a 9th grade level for now. He stared and finished a couple of Halo novels since the beginning of last summer. That’s what kind of gave me this idea.
I’m going to pick a book each summer from now until he graduates for us to read together over his summer breaks and have discussions about his he topics and themes of the books. He’s very interested in WW2 and is making connections with current events in real time.
I’ve decided our first book, this summer’s read, is going to be 1984. Hoping he’ll branch out to Fahrenheit and other classics from there. The last book I’ve already decided as well. I think we’ll do Lord of the Flies next summer. I’m just looking for a few other suggestions that everyone should read at some point in their life.
Anyone care to offer a couple of suggestions.

check out [Maus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maus), parts 1 and 2! it’s a graphic novel but it’s amazing and a lot of themes translate to current events
ETA: maus might be a little heavy when it comes to the topic of ww2, but i read milkweed by jerry spinelli in 5th grade so he might like that.
