I'm just finishing Witch King by Martha Wells for a second time and really appreciating how incredibly real the characters are. The plot is honestly very confusing especially for the first book in a series, but the strength of the characters completely makes up for it (and honestly, the plot is really cool too, I'm not complaining at all). I love the type of book that takes itself, its plot and and its characters seriously, to such an extent that hilarious things happen in serious moments, because they do in real life too, that's just how people are. The books I was reading before picking this up again seem completely stale comparatively, so I want something to read next that will be as entertaining and real-feeling, in terms of character.
Any suggestions? I prefer scifi and fantasy but anything is good!

Ilona Andrews Innkeeper Chronicles –A magic Inn, space werewolves and vampires, a lot of really unique aliens, mystery, romance, action, a fun and humorous series (or any of their other series)
Jana DeLeon Miss Fortune series
I always hesitate to recommend this because of how popular it is, but I think Dungeon Crawler Carl might be what you’re looking for. I don’t think it’s technically a sci fi but I feel like it’s in the same vein… It’s super fast paced and high stakes, very action packed, good jokes- although a little crude or immature at times so if that’s not your thing just a heads up. I find the characters to be super realistic (except for the talking cat lol) and well written, especially as the series goes on.
