It’s been a while since I’ve read it, but highly recommend Solaris by Stanislaw Lem.

Have you read Cat’s Cradle by Vonnegut? Definitely weird and whimsical. Maybe a little less informative but certainly has a similar narrator feel, in a more modern context. Also, if you have a book you know you love, you can check out BriefCandleBooks.com – basically gives you a recommendation based on that, and can refine it as you rate others.
