Industrial revolution era book

I have been racking my brain to remember what book I read about an industrial era 20 something young school teacher dealing with the change of trying to find a partner while deal with our society moving away from nature. Major scenes was a young girl drowning at a picnic with her drowning her savior with her. I keep thinking it's T S Elliot but I can't rember a title. Time period would have been late Victorian early Edwardian. I just remembered how much it unsettled me.
