I‘m always searching for more books about friendships between two entirely different intelligent species and the process of learning the other’s culture, biology, history, etc. Temeraire (human + dragon) is a favorite, as is Project Hail Mary (human + alien). I did dislike the Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet though—was too fluffy and insubstantial for me. I’d welcome recs of any genre!

Project hail Mary has that throughout with the underlying story being to save earth
“Nor Crystal Tears” by Alan Dean Foster
Check out Dungeon Crawler Carl.
The main characters are a human named Carl and a cat named Donut, and a major subplot is the figuring out their relationship to one another, how they can relate, etc.
It’s also a fantastic series overall.
Not what you had in mind but my first thought was The Incredible Journey 😂
…sounds like you’re looking for fiction?
but Dian Fossey’s Gorillas in the Mist is an absolute classic
Konrad Lorenz’s King Solomon’s Ring is an absolute classic
Birute Galdikas’s Reflections of Eden is not bad at all
haven’t read anything by Goodall yet but I’m told her book In the Shadow of Man was pretty dang good
