She struggles with a little visual issue , thus a reluctant reader because her eyes get exhausted.

    Seeking suggestions for :

    – light yet clever,

    – maybe a mystery.

    – Nothing too sad, dark or depressing.

    – Funny options are great

    – books of essays or short stories

    – she would probably like romance but nothing too sexual for now ( that would feel odd for mom to suggest to her )

    – something not too long that she could feel good about finishing

    1. If she is at all interested in fantasy, I’ll suggest **A Wizards Guide to Defensive Baking** by **T. Kingfisher** (one of the pen names for the author Ursula Vernon). the Main Character is a 14 yo girl working in her aunt’s bakery. Her magic is a little different. She cant cast fireballs or call lighting, her magic only works with baking. She can make the temperature in an oven perfect. She spends her free time making her gingerbread men dance, and keeping a lid on her familiar, a semi-sentient and slightly homicidal pail of sourdough starter.

There is a murder in the beginning of the book and a little bit of “scariness” when Mona (the MC) stumbles on a dead body in her bakery and finds out an assassin is hunting all the minor wizards, like her, in the city.

But its a fun story with a very strong female MC and it isn’t just blowing things up with magic to solve a problem.

**Ursula Vernon** also has other books that your daughter might enjoy. Her series **The Hamster Princess** is great, with another fantastic young, strong, female MC, though in hamster form. These are super short books (around 250 pages each) and are a hybrid graphic novel with tons of illustrations. Though I consumed these in audio-book form and liked them.

And there is also the single book **Castle Hangnail**, with…you guessed it another great female MC. This is a shorter book as well at jut under 400 pages, and might make it more enjoyable. It is also an illustrated novel.

Ursula Vernon (and her alter ego) has done wonders for the fantasy and YA community bringing relatable and enjoyable female MC’s into our world.
