The Goblin Emperor is one of my favorite books, and this is because of the main character, Maia, who deliberately chooses kindness over revenge. Maia comes from an abused background and is suddenly thrust into the most powerful position in the kingdom, but he keeps himself in check and deliberately coaches himself to choose kindness and compassion over violence and power with every move. His kindness slowly wins over the court and his people as he shows them thoughtfulness and respect that they are unaccustomed to.
Are there other books with main characters like this? Genuinely I love this book so much, it makes me tear up all the times Maia intentionally chooses to be kind instead of angry and petty. And when he is rewarded for these choices with acknowledgement and loyalty from those who previously were indifferent to him, I start bawling.
