I do this kind of post about once a month. And, while I can’t speak for anyone else, I think it’s a fun way to get recommendations.
Basically, list three books that you enjoyed and would like recommendations for. Reasons behind why those books worked for you can be helpful as well. Don’t forget to respond to other readers with similar taste as yourself.
My three that I’d like recommendations for are below:
Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech – as an adult, I’ve yet to come across an author who rivals Creech’s work. I think Kingsolver is a decent comparison but Creech is more subtle in her messaging with nice build up whereas Barbara Kingsolver is heavy handed with it. I like a little more subtlety. I’ve also seen recommendations for Fannie Flagg in conjunction with this request but neither of these really have what I’m looking for. Has anyone come across a book or author who writes for adults and reminds you of Sharon Creech?
The Travelling Cat Chronicles by Hiro Arikawa – one of my favorite books. This book evokes nearly every emotion, making you laugh and then breaking your heart, and is so well done. I’m not looking for an animal themed book but I just haven’t found something as good as this one. I’ve also read quite a bit of Japanese fiction.
True Grit by Charles Portis – Charles Portis’s books are just fun and surprisingly funny. I anticipate recommendations for Shane and Lonesome Dove but I’m not looking for a western necessarily but maybe a comparable author.
