I’ve stumbled into a new genre for me which is a bit niche…I came across a photo book collection of Paul Thek’s letters to Peter Hujar, called Stay away from nothing, published by Primary Information. It contains photos of the real letters, postcards and photographs across 20 years of their lives from 1956-1975. I really adore seeing the real letters written in Paul’s own hand, complete with doodles and cross outs and such. And I fell in love with the intimacy and frankness of the genre.
I also recently read Letters to Eugène, a collection of Hervé Guibert’s and Eugène Savitzkaya’s correspondence published by semiotext(e), it’s in the same genre.
I’m looking for other real life correspondence collections, bonus points for containing photos of the actual letters and/or for having more diverse interlocutors (queer, women, POC)
