As the title says I'm a big Harry Potter fan (not jk fan anymore) and I'm finally looking for a new book or series. I have tried reading LOTR and the Hobbit but it was to much description and not enough plot progression. I like the magic mystery aspect of Harry Potter as well as the easy world building. I watched all of the Magicians show and liked that but I don't know it's worth reading it as I'm looking for new stores.

TLDR: like Harry Potter for easy read/world building and mystery don't like LOTR for to much discription

    1. The Magicians series is really good, sooooo much better than the TV series.

The Scholomance series by Naomi Novik is terrific. It’s another magical boarding school setup, but darker.

    2. Check out the manga Witch Hat Atelier, which also has an anime adaptation coming out in a few weeks.

    3. I think you might like *The Night Watch*, T*he Day Watch* and *The Twilight Watch* by Russian author Sergei Lukyanenko, set in Moscow, and featuring an eternal conflict between the Light Others and the Dark Others.

    4. The Nevermoor series, about Morrigan Crow, a kind of chosen one who goes to magical school. Better than HP for sure!

    5. Paramedic229635 on

Differently Morphus and Existentially Challenged by Yahtzee Croshaw. Governmental agency involved in the regulation of magic and extra dimensional beings.

    6. Maybe the Bartimaeus trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. Or the Lockwood books by the same author.

    7. BelmontIncident on

The Scholomance series by Naomi Novik

The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher

The InCryptid series by Seanan McGuire

    8. I suggest Ben Aaranovitch’s’s Rivers of London series. It’s about a London police officer called Peter Grant who encounters a ghost and becomes an apprentice wizard in a secret Metropolitan Police department that deals with the supernatural.
