Not hard and firm on the 25 years, could be up to 50.
Basically, I've read every book by Collins and I just can't get enough of him. A painstakingly detailed plot, with twists and turns along the way and an ending you don't see coming, lots of characters that you grow to love and many you grow to hate, funny, sad, reflective in parts … all the good stuff.
But I'm kind of sick of the stuffy Victorian aspect of the books – I could do without reading any more treatises on succession of property and guardianship, lol. So I am not looking for writers contemporary to Collins that I might like.
I am very, very hard on modern mysteries for the most part and try and fail with a lot of them- I've already read Gone Girl and most of the other noir thrillers that grew up around it. They're okay, I didn't hate them.
Alas, I need something more modern, whattya got?

we probably have very different tastes, but if you like mysteries and are willing to take a risk you could try Cetaganda (1995)
