I’m a big fan of horror. Not so much extreme horror with excessive gore, but horror that makes you question everything around you when you’re alone. I’m an active/outdoorsy dude and tend to gravitate towards stories that take place in the environments I frequent.

Stuff like Michelle Paver’s Dark Matter and Thin Air, Adam Nevill’s The Ritual, Maynard’s House by Herman Raucher, anything by Ronald Malfi tends to hit the right notes as well.

Problem is, I don’t feel like I ever take much away from the stories I read. I recently read What Doesn’t Kill Us by Scott Carney (not something I typically read, but I am into the things that push us to our limits as humans) and I can’t count how many random things I’ve learned from it.

So, while I’m not looking for more exactly like that, I’d love some horror or horror adjacent that blends non-fiction with fiction, made up stories that revolve around real events, stories that will teach me about an era/place/thing. War seems to be a common plot point in a lot of this style of writing, but some suggestions would be great!
