Thank you in advance, I really appreciate the opinions and suggestions of the redditors here. I've probably asked this before but would like an updated list of suggestions!
What I loved:
- Anything Kazuo Ishiguro (except Buried Giant)
- Agatha Christie (side note: her book 'Absent in the Spring' written under a pseudonym is brilliant and is not a mystery book)
- Khaled Hosseini's three books
- Flowers for Algernon
- Still Alice
- Flannery O Connor's short stories
- The heart is a lonely hunter
- Stephen King's short novellas and 11/22/63
- I who have never known men
- A Short Stay in Hell
- Stoner
- Demon Copperhead and Poisonwood Bible
- Anna Karenina
- GRR Martin's dunk and egg series
- Gone Girl
- The glass castle (also like Educated but not so much)
Suggestions I tried but I didn't enjoy as much (with reasons)
- Lonesome Dove – not into the theme
- Count of Monte Cristo – found it too long, will try the abridged version soon
- East of Eden – nice read but won't call it my favorites
- Other mystery books – didn't really click for me like Agatha Christie's, I guess I enjoy the simplicity of her books, yet there's still layers of psychology/complexity to unravel about each character
- Piranesi – nice read but not as good as ASSIH and IWHNKM
- Other books by the authors above – generally good reads but with some dislikes
- Murakami's books – couldn't get into the themes
- Circe – I like this but not her other books
