Okay leaving for a trip in under a week, need to loan a book ASAP and I have no idea what to read.
Looking for something relatively light (on the prose side). Think Gillian Flynn, Stephen King more than Pynchon. I'm ESL and don't want to be struggling with comprehension. Publication should be recent-ish (let's say 80s to today) because older English causes issues (again, I'm ESL).
Essentially I'm looking to be entertained more than anything.
Bonus points if its on the longer side, so that I can really immerse myself in the world during the trip.
I'll be borrowing from my local library system in Finland, so the book will have to be popular enough to land here. Love hidden gems, but I will struggle to find them on short notice.
Genre doesn't matter necessarily, but I do love horror, mystery, scifi, bildungsromans etc.
Hard no on light romance/erotica (no offense intended, just not my bag).
Here are some examples of books that I've liked that kinda scratch this itch: Babel, Katabasis, Yellowface (R.F. Kuang); Secret History, The Goldfinch (Donna Tartt); Gone Girl, Sharp Objects (Gillian Flynn); IT, The Outsider, The Shining (among various others, Stephen King); A Song of Ice and Fire (G.R.RM).
Hope this isn't too scatterbrained for a recommendation—apologies if it is. Just had to post this before I'm leaving in the hopes of finding a book ASAP.
All recommendations are welcome (leave checking the Finnish library system to me).
Thank you in advance.
