Hello everyone! First time poster. I’m looking for a new sci-fi series to read with a minimum of 4 books in length, but preferably longer. Unfortunately, while writing this post I’ve realized I can be pretty picky, but I’ll do my best to give a rough idea on what I’m looking for knowing that a single book series likely won’t check all the boxes.
Here’s some series that I have read and enjoyed and why if this helps: (POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD!!)
Renegade Star by J.N Chaney:
– I liked the “zero to hero” aspect, I enjoyed how he starts as a “renegade” bounty hunter running from the law, and ends with being the de-facto ruler of earth.
– I like how his crew becomes like a “found family”
– I liked the action, the space battles, and the “space opera” feel, but I also enjoyed the mystery side of things when looking for earthly artifacts.
– I enjoyed how there lulls in the story, it isn’t just all action 100% if the time. This includes the small and “boring” things like stopping to refuel somewhere.
– I enjoyed the romance, though I wish there was more.
Backyard Starship by J.N Chaney:
– I liked the “zero to hero” aspect where he starts from nothing and works up to a powerful position.
– I liked the fact that he’s almost like a space cop, fighting crime, investigating, and battling other ships.
– I liked how he eventually recruits more crew, which almost becomes his family.
– I really enjoyed how the author does world building, naming many systems, describing cool planets and stars, and different alien species that aren’t just “the obvious villain” as well as the politics of each interstellar government
– I really enjoyed the technical details of the ship. How the ship needs to refuel occasionally with anti-matter, how only an AI can use the warp drive, the basic descriptions on how the ships and its weapons work.
– I enjoyed the witty humor
– I enjoyed the romance, although I wish there was a bit more
Starship of the ancients by A.K DuBoff
– I liked “main character has a hidden past” concept
– I liked the main characters being stranded on a hostile planet concept, having to work together to find a way off and escape
– I liked how the romance develops
In general, I’d appreciate if this new series could have:
– Meaningful romance, not just an afterthought or forced. A bit of smut is fine, but I’d prefer to avoid BL, love triangles, or polygamy. Just not my taste.
– Series should have an interesting sci-fi plot like the series mentioned above (in my humblest opinion). I’m pretty open regarding this, I enjoy some mystery, adventure, action, survival, etc.
– Series should have good world building. Like cool ships, new and exciting planets, interstellar politics, different alien species.
– I’d prefer if the series has a male protagonist. I’m definitely not against a female protagonist, but it’s a preference.
Id appreciate if this series could avoid:
– Multiple POV. I don’t necessarily mind the concept, but often I find it can be excessive with 3 or more POVs.
– Love triangles or multiple romantic partners
– The classic “humans vs aliens” theme. While one of my favorite Scifi series Fringe Worlds by Kevin Hardman has this theme, most of the time I find it plain and boring.
– Excessively gritty or depressing. I’d like to escape from reality, not read a different version of it 😂
