Hi, I’d love to get back into reading and would love to find a light, fun, weird book with characters or societies that aren’t human. I’m not talking the usual vampires/werewolves/mermaids—basically human but with sharp teeth and anger issues. I want to read something where it really gets into how these creatures are different from humans, and what that means about their societies.
I’d also prefer something that tends toward being a light and easy read. Dark themes are okay, but I want the tone to be hopeful and warm.
The characters can be anything from aliens to dragons to biblically accurate angels with four heads. I just don’t want the text to shy away from the fact these creatures are different from humans. Genre can be whatever, though queer representation would be a huge plus.

Sweep of the Blade by Ilona Andrews- yes, it’s vampires, and yes the MFC is a human, and it is a romance- but in this world, vampires are related to humans, but not human. This book goes into a lot about why vampire society has come to be the way that it is, what vampires value, and why, and how that caused problems for the FMC in her first marriage, and why the MMC and his family are different.
Watership Down by Richard Adams. Beautiful folklore and world building, my favorite book of all time about a group of rabbits searching for a better life. It handles big themes of freedom vs safety, but is a joyful read as you explore this rich world full of bravery and subtle humor.
Wild Life by Amanda Leduc
It’s just one creature and some humans, but The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove features Steve, a primordial sea beast looking for love. And you get the internal monologue of a dog
