Okay my aunt has kind of gone cuckoo with the religion stuff and we honestly think she might have some mental issues. She refuses to take my cousins to school because she thinks the kids are demons and blah blah blah.

So my cousins read books at home. One of them loves A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Anyway, I keep seeing the book Anne of Green Gables thrown around but I’ve never personally read it. I think I might buy this for one of them.

I want to buy one book for each. Can you all suggest me some books for them? I once read about Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret (I watched the movie only) but then read that they briefly mention Playboy or something. I think that might be too much for my aunt.

    Thank you!

Yeah, I would stay away from anything with God in the title. You don’t want to scare your aunt away from letting you have subtle influence on your cousins. Go for independent female heroines that will inspire your cousins to think for themselves instead.

Anne of Green Gables or Jane Eyre (if she has a higher reading level) might be great for the oldest one!

For the 10-year-old, I would suggest Caddie Woodlawn, Island of the Blue Dolphins, or The Secret Garden. (Depending on reading level, these could also be good choices for the older cousin .)

For the 8-year-old, I would suggest Ramona Quimby, Age 8.

This is very thoughtful of you, and remaining a safe link to the outside world for them might make a huge difference.

They might all enjoy The Penderwicks by Jeanne Birdsall. It’s a series, and the books are about a family of sisters in a similar age range. I don’t remember anything that would be upsetting to a religious mom.

Little Women, Little House on the Prairie, and The Phantom Tollbooth. But I’d say this goes beyond a book. Can you foster good relationships with the girls so you can be an adult they can trust to help them in case this gets worse?
