Malazan book of the fallen by Steven Erikson, I have read the name of the wind but I am going to guess that Malazan after the second book in the series is darker.

Never read name of the wind and never will, unless he finishes the series. Joe Abercrombie is my go to here.

if you like Rothfuss’s lyrical prose, then you might also enjoy the work of Catherynne M. Valente. I love her novel Deathless, which is retelling of a Russian folktale set during the first half of the 20th century.
