By investigator I mean the main character who attempts to solve the mystery.
I want a book where
The investigator isn't returning to their hometown
The investigator's ex isn't the chief of police, sheriff, local journalist etc. (this is fine if they don't factor in to the mystery too much)
If it's a small town mystery then the investigator shouldn't be living there (they shouldn't have existing relations with most of the people involved in the mystery)
The mystery isn't the investigator having mental illness
The investigator doesn't have any conditions that causes people to not believe them
The killer isn't the investigator's ex's new partner
The killer isn't whoever hires/employs the investigator
The killer reveals themselves thourgh sheer stupidity
The killer isn't a rich man killing women just because (killing one woman for a specific reason is fine but no deranged serial killers)
The books recommended don't necessarily have to be murder mysteries. Any type of mystery is ok.

An obvious contender, but mid 00s, would be The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – Stieg Larsson
