I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for books with complex narratives involving intrigue and politicking like Wolf Hall, The Power Broker, or The Name of the Rose, but following subjects from the premodern world, and preferably outside of England or France as I've already read a decent amount about that region.
I love non-fiction, particularly about the non-Western world per-colonization, but I typically only find books that address broad topics and subjects rather than craft a narrative around a smaller scope. My favorite non-fiction tends to focus on either a singular person like in The Power Broker, a short period of history like Fear City, or a small region like The Invention of Sicily, though that time period was broader than what I'm currently looking for.
My current next-up is Lords of The Deccan, but I've had a hard time finding other books that check my many boxes and aren't about Medieval England or France, though I welcome all recommendations!
Essentially, I'd love recommendations about a pre-1600s subject and deliver a narrative through line while staying historically accurate.
Thank you, everyone!
