I read the entire series to them these last 12 months and we are looking for the next adventure. My daughter doesn't want to read Percy Jackson and I think they are likely a little young for LOTR or even The Hobbit, for pacing reasons more than content. Narnia is a possibility but I am looking for something I haven't heard of or at least considered yet. I was thinking about doing a refresh with something like Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, just to switch it up completely but the kiddos haven't exactly jumped at that idea. Any and all suggestions welcome!

You might try L. Frank Baum’s Wizard of Oz. If it clicks there is a whole series of Oz books. My daughters liked them.

Something that doesn’t bankroll a horribly hateful human being. Anything by JK Rowling garbage

    3. I read to my 11 year old and we’ve really been enjoying the Wrinkle in Time series. The Black Cauldron series by Lloyd Alexander is another great one. The Vesper Holly series by the same author is also great.

Differently Morphus and Existentially Challenged by Yahtzee Croshaw. Governmental agency involved in the regulation of magic and extra dimensional beings.

      Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke

Tobie Alone by Timothée de Fombelle

      Rose by Holly Webb

      The Giver – Lois Lowry

      Artemis Fowl – Eoin Colfer

Ready Player One – Ernest Cline

    7. The Morrigan Crow/Nevermoor series by Jessica Townsend.

      * Nevermoor: The Trials of Morrigan Crow
      * Wundersmith: The Calling of Morrigan Crow
      * Hollowpox: The Hunt for Morrigan Crow
      * Silverborn: The Mystery of Morrigan Crow

    8. Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer (I think I spelled the author’s name right!)

The Bartimaeus Trilogy was incredible. Alternate Victorian era with magic and monsters.

    9. The Wildwood Trilogy

      His Dark Materials

      The Abhorsen Cycle

The Seventh Tower (actually, just everything by Garth Nix)

    10. If they like horror/dark fantasy Night Fall Gardens by Allen Houston was quite good.

I haven’t read all of them by Ascendant by Michael Miller was a fun coming of age with dragons and zombie mega bugs.

Series of Unfortunate Events is always a good one too. A bit bleak but it’s fun and teaches lots of new words.

Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary is a lot of fun too.

I liked “Guardians of Ga-Hoole”. The main characters are owls! Another popular one is “Warrior Cats”. 🙂

    12. My 10-year-old loves the *Wings of Fire* Series, and there are loads of them. She read the graphic novels on her own, but started with audiobooks for the novels.

The whole family loved reading *The Bletchley Riddle* together.

We read *Impossible Creatures* and *The Poisoned King* by Katherine Rundell together.

My husband is on his second re-read of *A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking* with her.

    13. My 10 year old daughter and I are reading Aftermyth by Tracy Wolff together. So far we are loving it! It’s sort of a mix of Harry Potter & Percy Jackson (she loved both those series). She also loved the Impossible Creatures & the Poisoned King by Katherine Randell. Oh and we both really liked the Puppets of Spelhorst by Katie DiCamillo. My kids enjoyed the Hobbit on audiobook, so it may still be a fun option! We are waiting to do LOTR a little longer for similar reasons.

Redwall is one we are looking at in the future. My girls are 8&10 and this was one of my husband’s favorite series that he wants to read with them.

The Wind Singer trilogy by William Nicholson. I absolutely loved them as a child and have re-read them a couple of times as an adult. Like Harry Potter, the characters age over the course of the books, which I always like. Seriously underrated books!
