    Hello y’all,

I got into it with my girlfriend a bit, in a civil way, about gender roles. My whole point was basically that they are mostly arbitrary and arise mostly out of material conditions. (Ex. If you are the only source of income, this might lead you to have more power in the household given that you have the economic power).

Like yeah, I’ll change a tire, protect my family, or put food on the table because I want to be useful and care for the people I love. Not cause I want it to be my role as a “man” or whatever.

I was just kind of shooting off the hip with my examples but is there any deep dive into this sort of thing? I’d imagine it’s sociological or anthropological in nature? Anyways I’d appreciate some recommendations lol

It’s a bit dense but The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir is famous for her “one is not born but becomes a woman” phrase – as in, people act like gender roles are inherent, but they’re socially constructed.
