I(30 M) am quite new to reading and would like to include more reading time in my routine. I have already started and finished some. But this books don't challenge me in the way I was hoping for. I finish them and i am like, OK!

Is there a way to read a book? I know not all books are supposed to make you think(are they?) how do you enjoy reading more? I would like something to make me think, change me even in slight way, have an "aha" moment, in such way that I felt something or learned something valuable.

So far I have read fictions, and one economic history which was interesting but heavy to read(for me) on daily basis.

Taking notes or journaling while i read really helps me connect with a book (albeit it is more work).

I recommend to you The Well Educated Mind by Susan Wise Bauer and How to Read a Book by Mortimer Adler.

Read the Three Body Problem trilogy. And if you understand the end of the third book, come back and explain it to me like I’m five…

I would personally recommend that you just keep reading. It’s my opinion that reading is a skill and that skills require practice. You haven’t found something that moves you yet AND THAT’S FINE. Not everything is going to result in some soul-shattering revelation. I’m a pretty big reader and count myself lucky that I’ve had a few of those in my life.

It may be useful to you to nail down why you want to read. This may help guide the books you pick up. People read for different reasons. In my estimation, any reason is a good reason. We contain multitudes. If you want to be more ‘literary’, check out Booker Prize shortlists. If you want to be traditionally ‘well-read’, dip your toe into the Classics. Try genres that surprise you. Give pulpy page-turners a chance. This is something you can enjoy- reading should not be an exercise in masochism. Your books haven’t found you yet but if you keep reading, I promise that they will.
