I'm in a terrible rut and I blame Romantasy, a genre I'm trying to recover from and read other things. I generally love magical realism, fantasy, and sci-fi (this one the least). Because of my dopamine withdrawal, I'm looking for something that's either short-ish (around 300 pages) or is relatively fast-paced. I've picked up a number of super interesting-premised books but they move slowly and it doesn't seem like they're building anywhere, more meandering, so I put them down.
Some of my favorite books include:
– Babel, Poppy Wars by RF Kuang
– Kindred by Octavia Butler
– Most things by Murakami or Vonnegut (but not for right now re. looking for something plot-driven)
– Throne of Glass series – SJM
– Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by VE Schwab (also liked A Darker Shade of Magic; liked Vicious less)
– Project Hail Mary
– Jurassic Park
Did not like or DNF'd
– Mistborn (felt too video-gamey re. the magic system)
– Blood over Bright Haven (again re. magical system felt too technical to pull me in)
– Katabasis (:/ I was SO sad I dnf'd this. I just was not interested in the characters enough to finish. I tried, I really did)
– Senlin Ascends – loved the writing and idea, but it was too slow-paced
– The Tainted Cup – I loved the writing, but turns out I'm just not into murder mysteries
– The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi
– Schoolmance series (TBH, I barely read any of it. I did not like the writing style)
I WANT to read:
All of Susanna Clarke's books. I love the writing and premises. But they're a little too prosaic for me right now, so they're on the waitlist. I also have Ursula Le Guin's books on that list.
Please help.
