I remember enjoying Shel Silverstein’s poetry books at that age. Lots to choose from.

Garfield comics or “All about Sam” by Lois Lowry
Adding that all the boys in my elementary school at the time were reading Matt Christopher books. They were all obsessed with sports. I couldn’t get into them.

Holes by Louis Sachar was one of my favorites I read around that age.

My favorite series to read at that age was The Babysitters Club but I kinda suspect your nephew wouldn’t be interested in them.
The Boxcar Children series was another I liked.
Shel Silverstein’s poetry books, and another poetry book that I think was called A Pizza the Size of the Sun were fun reads
* I wasn’t interested in them as a kid, but the Goosebumps series may interest him

Hatchet. Tracker by the same author (Gary Paulson). Bridge to Terabithia. The Little House on the Prairie series. Goosebumps. Beverly Cleary, specifically the Ramona books. Babysitter’s Club. I was in 3rd grade in 1991-92 so I guess that ages me.
