I want to read a story set in a dark, dangerous, seedy setting. I'm picturing murky back alleys with neon signs half obscured by smoke, peppered by gambling dens, brothels, and the kind of bars where a naive visitor will wake up the next morning without his wallet or his shoes.
It could be sci-fi, present day, or historical fiction (doesn't have to have neon signs!). Could be any time or place – 1970s Vegas, present day Bangkok, Dickensian London, the old wild west, or set on a space station in 2100, but preferably no fantasy / magic.
Preferably a novel; could be a novella or short stories, but has to be fiction.
As you can probably guess from the above, no problem at all if it features sex or violence or drug use, or other "adult" stuff, but I'm not looking for porn / erotica or similar. I want an actual story. I also don't want to read anything too horrific. I'm looking for seedy atmosphere, rather than a harrowing story about a serial killer.
