I recently finished this book and, well—what can I say. While I enjoyed the author’s writing style and some of the depictions of the harsh everyday realities of war and occupation, the rest was… hard to describe. The violence and perversion felt so over the top that after two or three shocking scenes, it started to come across almost as a parody of itself. I was genuinely shocked once or twice, but after that, the brutal and twisted moments just made me think, “oh shit, here we go again.” There was so much gore and perversity that it lost its impact and ended up feeling merely edgy.
If you have read the book, what do you think?
