Ever had a story become part of you? There is a story I read way back in 1991. I think it is a short story, but it could possibly have been a play. It was assigned reading in a university course, so I'm pretty sure it is considered a classic.
It revolved around two men who are both interested in the same woman. The genre was Literary Realism, and I'm fairly sure the author is well known.
The reason I'm inquiring 35 years later is I want to read it again with the eyes of someone who has now lived a reasonably long life to see if I can figure it out better now than back then. The classroom discussion that stuck in my head was this: although the genre was clearly that of Literary Realism, its ending is decidedly Freudian–they smoked their cigars and she drank her tea.
Somehow, 35 years later, I'm STILL turning that over in my head.
Is there anyone who recognizes it?
