Book(s) where the main character comes across as the sort of person who doesn’t think their life was ultimately a happy one in the end, or outright says as much?

Basically a book that resonates with that one quote from Tina Turner:

 “It wasn’t a good life. The good did not balance the bad."

Like with Inspector Morse or Dark Places by Kate Grenville. Also very much not the sort of story that starts at that point and then has them getting happy because they fall in love or something at that, no… Just a sad life, or at the very least one that was just not enough, and it ends there… Preferably a story where the main character has always had a sort of melancholy or feeling of unfairness and nothing changed or things got worse despite their aspirations rather than a story about someone with a happy early life who had it all robbed from them.

Am okay with some biographical books too even if fiction is my first instinct.
