I'm interested in fiction where family relationships get tangled in ways that are uncomfortable but not sensationalized. The kind of book where closeness, dependency, and history create bonds that feel both necessary and damaging. Not looking for shock value, just honest writing about how families can be beautiful and broken at the same time.

I think about The Family by Mario Puzo, which deals with the Borgias. Also Marilynne Robinson's Gilead touches on generations carrying each other's weight. There's a tenderness in those books even when things get dark.

What novels handle these difficult family dynamics with care and depth? The ones where you understand why people stay even when it hurts.
