Please suggest me a book on stoicism. Not necessarily a book on philosophy or self-help.

      Modern books:

How to Be a Stoic by Massimo Pigliucci

Ryan Holiday’s books are popular. My favorite is Ego is the Enemy. The Obstacle is the Way is great too. I didn’t find Courage is Calling to be that great and it’s the only one of his stoic virtues books I’ve read.

My favorite modern book for stoicism broadly (Holiday’s tend to drill down on a single topic) is How to Think Like A Roman Emperor by Donald Robertson. It combines Stoicism with modern cognitive therapy and does a wonderful job bringing it into modern contexts for daily life.

      The original texts:

Marcus Aurelius’ Meditations is certainly the most well-known and most often recommended. It’s great, but not my favorite because it’s a journal and not written for an audience.

The Enchiridion of Epictetus is good.

My favorite stoic to read is Epictetus. His letters and dialogues are wonderful and I prefer his style. On Providence is my favorite.
