Most accurate public domain translation of "The Odyssey"? I'm aware that Fagles, Wilson, and the like are considered the best. Additionally, are Samuel Butler's version and the AmazonClassics version any good? Most accurate public domain translation of "The Odyssey"? butler’s prose translation is solid if you want something readable without the poetry getting in the way. its from 1900 so the language feels a bit dated but not impossible to get through. amazon classics just reprints public domain stuff so thats probably butler or maybe lattimore
for accuracy though you might want to check out lattimore’s version – its public domain now and way more literal than most modern translations. reads a bit clunky but you get closer to what homer actually wrote. pope’s version is classic but its basically a different poem entirely with all the 18th century flourishes
