Hello, everybody. I will be traveling soon, and I'm searching for a good book or two to read while away from home.
As someone who likes horror and fantasy and has a big interest in biology and paleontology, I realized that what I enjoy most is learning about those fantastic worlds and the creatures inhabiting them.
So I'm basically searching for a book (preferably horror with a good dose of paranoia) with emphasis on non-human creatures as the "antagonists".
To make it a bit more clear, here are two (non-book) examples that really stuck with me:
"Weird birds" – by Archesuchus
In this ARG, dinosaurs and more fantastical beasts are suddenly appearing on earth. The first "season" is especially tense, with the neighborhood of the protagonist becoming the hunting ground of a pack of Troodons and him slowly realizing that they can mimic human speech and have found ways into his home.
"Muldoon's Log" – by Ali Awada
This is an analog horror series set in the Jurassic Park universe and takes place before the events of the books and the movies. It follows Robert Muldoon and his work as a game warden who slowly realizes that the dinosaurs might not be as contained as the humans think they are. Throughout the series, the viewers get small glimpses of raptors outside their enclosures, really ramping up the paranoia, but what makes it so special to me is that outside of the tense scenes, you follow Muldoon just doing his work while talking about the behavior and needs of the animals in his care.
Now, I know both of these examples have dinosaurs in them, but this is not a necessity. The book can also be about fantastical beasts, eldritch horrors, or almost any other form of non-human creature.
