We're taking a 6 hour road trip this weekend, just the two of us, and i would like a few options for audiobooks. He just turned 9 this month and was diagnosed with dyslexia, so he's never particularly enjoyed reading, though he's recently gotten into the Dogman graphic novels.

Things we've watched recently though. Stranger Things. Crushed all 5 seasons in about a month. Predator movies. Captain America and Avengers movies. We've watched Harry Potter movies but they didn't really capture his imagination much.

So maybe Tolkein? Wind in the Willows? Is Frankenstein too adult? I'm leaning toward a classic for the car ride.

We're going to a baseball game in Cleveland if that makes any difference.

The Hobbit, The Chronicles of Narnia, Treasure Island, might all be good candidates. I think Frankenstein might wax more philosophical than most 9 year olds would be interested in.

My family listened to the entirety of the hobbit + LOTR on cassette when we roadtripped around Iceland when I was a kid. My brother would have been about your son’s age and enjoyed them. Start with the Hobbit and then you can keep listening on future far journeys? We also listened to the Chronicles of Narnia as kids, they’re shorter so you should get a full book out of a 6 hour journey.

Other things that came to mind, but not quite as classic:

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams

      Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

    4. I’m like a broken record with recommending this, but the How to Train Your Dragon books, read by David Tennant, are BY FAR the best audiobooks we’ve ever listened to. All my kids love them, even my teenagers who hate everything. Couldn’t think of anything better for a 9 year old boy.

    5. Try Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins. It’s the first book in a series of 5. The main character is an 11 year old boy. I have 5 boys who have all loved this series, and I’ve read it along with them. It’s fantastic.
