I'm trying to find other books like these, i'm not sure what category these fall under. They are mostly by journalists.
Cobalt Red: How the Blood of the Congo Powers Our Lives
Behind the Beautiful Forevers: Life, Death, and Hope in a Mumbai Undercity
Mountains Beyond Mountains
City of Thorns: Nine Lives in the World's Largest Refugee Camp
A Long Way Gone
War Child: A Boy Soldier's Story
I'm assuming these are considered humanitarian. If anyone has any suggestions i'd appreciate it.

You might want to check out “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down” by Anne Fadiman – it’s about the clash between Hmong culture and American medicine. “Random Family” by Adrian Nicole LeBlanc is another solid pick that follows two women in the Bronx over a decade
Also “Nothing to Envy” about North Korea and “The Devil Came on Horseback” about Darfur both hit that same investigative journalism vibe you’re going for
