I don’t find much when looking up anything about it.
‘Everything has a purpose on this earth, and all things fulfill their purpose – seaweed, dung beetles, parasites – without agonizing or questioning. We are the only part of Creation that is blinded by desires and thus ignore our particular purpose, individually and collectively, and spend our lives in mad pursuit of nothingness’

tried searching for that gottfried llewelyn-jones quote too and came up empty – pretty sure selby made up both the author and book title. he did that kind of thing where he’d create fake epigraphs to set the mood for his stories. there’s no record of “anatomy and evolution of universal madness” anywhere i could find.
I like the idea of an author doing this. Sounds like sheer playfulness though in Selby’s case I suppose it might have been because the nature of his books left him needing a bit of comic relief.
Not saying that to belittle the German Welshman Gottfried Llewelyn-Jones, who was as well known for serving dinner guests sheep schnitzels as for his quotability.
Thanks for an interesting post.
