Looking for books (preferably female authors) that have similar feel to The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath and The Destroyed Woman by Simone De Beauvoir. Books with feminist themes and a protagonist dealing with mental health challenges that make them at times unlikeable, but also relatable in a very human way. Crime and Punishment is another favorite, though without the female protagonist. I tend to prefer classic literature, but open to modern books that fit this theme. I also love that these books are relatively short – I have a hard time with classics that go on for too long, such as Jane Eyre. I’ve been recommended My Year of Rest and Relaxation, which I think is along the same lines but I found the writing not so great, the premise too strange and unbelievable, and the protagonist was too unrelatable/unlikeable.
