I was brought up reading classic novels, where there is some agreement as to who are the “great” writers within the various literary traditions of the west and east. I would like to read some modern literature, but I have limited time and many of the vast number of books published annually seem to be described by publishers in hugely over-inflated terms.
Do I just accept that it is every woman or man and her or his story, or do people think there is a handful of stand-out writers currently (in English, my main language) who are real pioneers in style, language, perception and vision amongst this mass of sometimes self-promoting publishing? I have read many books published since 2000 and have been mostly disappointed. I know people will not agree on this, but some thoughts would be really appreciated.
I’m talking about fiction. There is some brilliant non-fiction being published at the moment for instance on science, AI, medicine, history and technology.
