I enjoy reading but I have a problem where I fall asleep if I read for more than 30 mins. I can feel my eyelids close and I then need to nap. This happens during the day so it’s not a night time thing. I’ve been consistently getting 8 hours sleep so I don’t think it’s because of that. I am really into the books I’m reading so it’s not from boredom. It’s annoying because I would love to spend a Saturday reading, but if I try and do that I feel like I’m wasting the day napping. I can watch TV or scroll on my phone without any sleepiness. It’s not narcolepsy. It only happens when I read. I have ADHD which may be part of it, but I’m medicated. I usually read on my kobo. Any advice appreciated!

    1. White noise helps!! I like to play rain sounds when I’m reading and it helps you stay focused into the book.

    2. I like to read while I’m doing things, which other people fine a bit nuts but idc. I do all my reading on ebook so it’s dead easy. I read while I’m in the shower (kindle in a Ziploc pinned to my wall), I read while I’m walking the dogs or on my treadmill, I read while I’m stirring my cooking, I read while I’m waiting in line. Etc. Can’t fall asleep while I’m doin other stuff!

Another benefit of an ebook is I can whack the font up real big so my eyes don’t get tired reading.

This looks silly, but you could try reading a book and pacing your apartment. If you’re active, it helps the mind being active as well.

The other part is just training your brain to sustain that focus, and obviously for some neurodivergent people the only true fix is medication. My best friend has ADHD and for her it’s physical books when she’s medicated and audio books when not.

Can you read outside? Or in a different spot than you normally do? Are you better at being awake when cold or warm? Maybe taking a break every 30 min and move around? Or reading in the morning when you wake up?
