Hi everyone, first time posting here. Over half the books I read last year were nonfiction or books from when I was a kid (I guess I was feeling nostalgic). Growing up, I really enjoyed fantasy and historical fiction and want to return to the genres, but I've been having trouble getting back into the swing of things and have DNF a lot of books in the past couple years.

Books I did read and enjoy last year or the year before for reference: The Bird King by G. Willow Wilson, We Are The Beasts by Gigi Griffis, Nettle and Bone and A Sorceress Comes to Call by T. Kingfisher, Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, The Night Ends with Fire by K.X. Song, The Wolf Den Trilogy by Elodie Harper, and Ariadne by Jennifer Saint. Also I've enjoyed everything written by June Hur. I also enjoyed the first Godkiller book by Hannah Kaner, but I couldn't get into the next book.

I tend to prefer standalone novels or duologies, but nothing more than a trilogy seems feasible for me. I couldn't get into The Poppy War. I like romance being present but usually more of a subplot to the main story, but I'm open to suggestions in that field too.

    Thank you!

    1. Check out Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb, the first book in her larger fantasy series, The Realm of the Elderlings. Beautifully written, compelling fantasy, with complex characters, rich world building, strange magics, adventure, and an epic story told over the course of multiple excellent trilogies. The first series follows Fitz, the bastard son of a dead prince, who is raised by others in the royal court to become the King’s assassin. A series that’s a bit lower on action, but high on emotion.
