I’ve mostly read fantasy my whole life, with the occasional non-fiction, and I still love it, I’ll probably always devour anything with magic. But I’ve noticed that when I try to branch out into other genres, I struggle to stay interested. I find it a bit limiting and would love to also read literary fiction, romance, or mystery/crime novels!
Some of my current favorites:
- Anything by Alix. E. Harrow (The Once and Future Witches, The Thousand Doors of January)
- The Golden Compass Series by Philipp Pullman
- Many cosy fantasy books (The Enchanted Greenhouse, Legends and Lattes, Regency Fairy Tales Series)
- Any fairy tale retelling, pretty much!
- Not a huge fan of romantasy and poorly written books take me out too quickly..
Outside of fantasy, I’ve enjoyed Near to the Wild Heart by Clarice Lispector, Seven Days in June, and The Game Changer Series, but none of them have felt as immersive or gripping to me as fantasy does.
I think what I’m looking for is literary fiction, mystery, or romance that still has that same vibe that fantasy gives me and does not feel like I'm reading the boring everyday life of some random wealthy white woman (no offense to everyday book enjoyers!)
