Every time I sit down to read, it starts feeling boring almost immediately. Unlike videos or social media, reading requires me to imagine everything on my own, and that feels like effort. On top of that, there are often difficult words, which break my flow and make the experience even more frustrating.
I want to change this. I want to rewire my brain so I can enjoy reading again, but I also don’t want to swing to the other extreme where I binge read a book in one go and then drop the habit entirely.
HELP! any suggestions? Book recommendations too!

try audiobooks first while doing something with your hands like organizing desk setup or whatever. helped me get back into stories without the mental effort of visualizing everything myself
also start with really short books or even graphic novels – sandman series got me hooked again after years of scrolling. once your brain remembers that stories can be engaging you can work up to longer stuff
Have you tried audiobooks? There are so many good ones these days, what sort of media (movies/shows/games/etc) are you into? I could give you some recs if I know a bit more about what you enjoy. A great audiobook narrator can really breathe life into a story, characters, a world. It’s like a movie in your mind.
If I just sit and listen to an audiobook, I tend to space out and lose focus almost immediately. The same for if I’m trying to listen while reading something else on my phone, or talking to anyone.
The key is to listen while you’re doing something mindless and automatic, like cleaning the apartment, doing dishes, driving on your commute, or going for a walk. Personally, I like to listen to audiobooks while I play a simple game, one that doesn’t involve reading or thinking, like Tetris or something.
Listening to a book in conjunction with doing some mindless task makes *both* sooo much better. I actually *want* to clean now, so that I will have an excuse to get lost in a book for an hour or so, and I find that while I’m mindlessly vacuuming or whatever, my brain tends to really zone into the book.
Hope that helps!
I recommend trying audiobooks, but also what book genres are you interested in reading? And what movies do you like? We need to know more about your interests to suggest something you will probably enjoy.
