My son is a very good reader but he needs some encouragement to step out of his reading comfort zone as he is very much a creature of habit!

He loves the captain underpants/wimpy kid series but if really like him to start reading some stuff with slightly more mature storylines – he has a box set of Sherlock Holmes which he likes a lot and had enjoyed the impossible creatures book.

I’m pretty out of touch with young literature and I think most of the things I read at his age he’d find too girly and/or old fashioned so please spam me with your suggestions!!

He starts secondary school in the autumn so I’d love to get him in the habit of reading some deeper texts!

    1. For some fun, modern, fantasy for that age range, check out **Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians** by Brandon Sanderson.

If you think he might enjoy a classic, check out **The Hobbit** by JRR Tolkien. A beautifully-written adventure, with great characters, lots of humor, action, and creative world building. It holds up super well! I’d say it *does* start off a little slow, but that’s really only for like the first chapter, once you’re past that and they’ve set out on the journey, it really doesn’t let up!
