New reader here trying to get out of a reading slump and looking for recommendations!
I recently got back into reading and ended up really enjoying a few books across very different genres. I loved The Silent Patient for its psychological twists and suspense. Ready Player One was super fun with all the gaming and pop culture references. The Hunger Games hooked me with its fast-paced dystopian story, and Norwegian Wood hit me in a completely different way with its emotional and introspective vibe.
Now I’m kind of stuck on what to pick up next. I’m open to anything that’s gripping and hard to put down—whether it’s thrillers, sci-fi, dystopian, or even something more emotional and character-driven like Norwegian Wood. Ideally, I want books that are engaging enough to keep me turning pages without feeling like a chore.
Some things I think I enjoy based on these:
– Strong storytelling that pulls you in quickly
– Interesting or unique concepts (like virtual worlds or dystopian societies)
– Psychological depth or emotional impact
– Twists or unpredictable elements
If you’ve been in a similar slump and found something that got you back into reading, I’d love to hear it. Even better if it has a similar vibe to any of the books I mentioned.
Thanks in advance really hoping to rebuild my reading habit with some great suggestions!

Strong storytelling: North Woods
Interesting concept: Piranesi
Dystopian: station eleven (also strong storytelling I’d say)
***Project Hail Mary* by Andy Weir (2021)**: man wakes up on a spaceship with no recollection of how he got there or what his mission is.
***Station Eleven* by Emily St. John Mandel (2014)**: set twenty years after a plague wipes out a good portion of humanity, follows a group of actors and musicians that travel between settlements.
***Dark Matter* (2016) or *Recursion* (2019) by Blake Crouch**: both sci-fi thrillers that move fast and deal with concepts of alternate dimensions, the multiverse and time-travel.
***Parable of the Sower* (1993) and *Parable of the Talents* (1998) by Octavia E. Butler**: A dystopian duology set in California in the 2020s and 2030s, society has collapsed in part because of climate change and overconsumption.
***The Dream Hotel* by Laila Lalami (2025)**: a woman is held in a detention center because an algorithm has determined that she may be a threat to society because of her dreams.
2038: Lost Identity
