Hey all, I’ve been reading a lot of fantasy lately. I’ve read several books with FeMC’s (Blood over bright haven, the witches part of DiscWorld, MistBorn, Poppy Wars).
But I’ve noticed in basically all of those books the female lead is very “different”. I.E. “I don’t care about dresses or love like the other girls I just want to …”Are there any good fantasy books in that same vein where the MC is more traditional, not that I dislike any of those books. I just want to read from a new perspective without it being Romantasy (I’m a 30 year old dude).
Appreciate it.

The Hell’s Library series starting with the The Library Of The Unwritten by A. J. Hackwith. It focuses on the “Unwritten Wing” in Hell, a neutral space where unfinished books and their restless stories reside, overseen by Head Librarian Claire. The trilogy combines mythology, adventure, and the magic of stories.
Paladin of Souls
House of the Beast by Michelle Wong is perfect for this. Bonus points if you’re a fan of the Fullmetal Alchemist manga/anime.
Samantha Shannon’s books are all like that.
Snow White and Rose Red by Patricia Wrede. Retelling of the Fairy Tale.
Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal. Basically Pride and Prejudice with magic.
Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton. What if Trollope wrote a book typical of him, but about Dragons?
The Jasmine Throne by Tasha Suri
A Touch of Blood by Sajni Patel
Forge of Ash and Gold (Has both FMC and MMC), Riyria Series (both MMC but good fantasy), its spin-off Legends of First Empire has FMC.
