Lately I've read The Story of the Inexperienced Ghost by H. G. Wells and I liked it so much that I would love to read something similar. I'm looking for novels and short stories, both classic and modern, where ghosts are either protagonists or secondary characters, have a lot of dialogue and distinct personalities. Any stories where they are mostly in the background or never make an actual appearance aren't really what I'm craving for right now.

Highly recommend h{{The Reformatory}} by Tananarive Due. Really horrific in both the literal aspect and the historical truths the story is rooted in

Cinder House by Freya Marske is a novella that centres on a ghost and is a Cinderella retelling

“The Canterville Ghost”–humorous short story by Oscar Wilde. This has apparently been made into a film two or three times.
